Ten years ago in the Philippines, not everyone has a mobile phone. It was only the elite and the very rich who could afford to buy those magnificent gadgets. If you had one, you are in!
Then a few years later, it seems as if everyone has a mobile phone. New networks came in to serve the growing number of subscribers. As a result, the service became friendlier especially to the students and even the unemployed. Back when the minimum amount for a cellphone load was still P250 pesos, many people already got crazy owning a mobile phone. Then, as if by miracle, cellphone loads became much cheaper and anyone in the Philippines, even the homeless, owns a cellular phone. This small piece of metal joins food, water and shelter as part of the necessities.
Apart from the usual functions of calling and texting, mobile phones can also be used as alarm clocks so one need not buy those collectible mantel clocks, nautical table clocks or even those unique wall clocks. The really great mobile phones also function as calculators, an email device, media player and they can also be used to browse the Internet.
Then the laptops came. Once again, only the rich and the privileged were able to have them. They are too expensive for an average employee. But then again, after a few years, companies created laptops that are cheap enough that almost any working individual can afford to buy them. Offices also replace desktops with laptops so work can be done anywhere and anytime. With WiFi zones sprouting like mushrooms, access to the internet becomes really easy.
With these cheap laptops, anyone can do anything wherever, whenever
. Increased access to the Internet allows the great writer or the artistic programmer to earn extra income. With laptops, communicating to your loved ones in any part of the world becomes easier.
With the many opportunities that these laptops open, it will not be long before these will join the mobile phones as part of a person’s necessities. After all, these two technologies make the world smaller…but brighter and happier.
