The bonsai tree is a unique art form that has a rich history and people all over the world now enjoy growing bonsai trees. Tufted Carpets In History And Today

The tufted carpets industry has a very interesting history. A Georgia woman named Catherine Evans Whitener began the tufting process in the 1890s. So many people liked her work that it rapidly gained popularity.

By the year 1920, there were manufacturers in the Carolina’s, Georgia and Tennessee that took it from a handcraft to a machine based craft. Singer, in the 1930s, developed a sewing machine that was capable of mass producing tufted robes, bedspreads, throw rugs and toilet seat covers. This development helped the tufted-textile industry to grow into one that generated millions of dollars by the 1940s.

Tufted carpets soon became one of the most controversial products being manufactured, when producers of wool carpets began putting them down, claiming the cotton made them a low quality product. The industry was saved in 1957, however, when a company named DuPont began selling a new product called bulked, continuous filament nylon.

Like cotton, the new nylon was inexpensive, yet performed as well as wool. It also could be sold for half of the square foot price of wool. This made the carpet industry one of the fastest growing in the 1960s.

By the year 2000, there were only four companies that controlled almost 80% of the carpeting industry in the United States. Mohawk, Shaw, Beaulieu and Interface were all based in Georgia. While Mohawk, Shaw and Beauliea concentrated mainly on the residential industry, Interface, the newcomer in the group, work to develop their name in the commercial industry.

They began providing what they called “modular carpeting” for use in institutions and offices. Floor mats became a whole new concept in the tufted carpets industry.

Silk on silk rugs have the highest knot count and usually have very intricate patterns. In addition to materials used, you can determine whether the rug is hand-or machine-spun by looking at the back of it. If the squares are all the same size, then the rug has been machine-spun.

You can also tell whether the dyes used are natural or the less expensive chemical versions by wiping a spot of the rug with a damp white cloth. If color bleeds off, then chemical dyes have been used. Keep in mind that bleeding off on the cloth also means they will bleed onto each other if the carpet is washed.

Turkish carpets are actually made in only a few regions of Turkey, often making this carpet style difficult to find. Weavers make them both to sell and to use as carpets, wall hangings, and even protective coverings during the severe temperature changes in that country.

As machine weaving has increased as a means of production, hand weaving has declined, but the hand-woven rugs still have the ability to be a family heirloom due to the quality of the weaving. Buyers need to take care, however, to ensure they actually get the custom carpets that they think they’re being sold.
