Losing hair everyday is a normal part of hair growth cycle

Losing hair everyday is a normal part of hair growth cycle. The 10% of our hair which is in a resting phase would fall out every 2 or 3 months with 90% of the hair in a growth phase. People start to notice their hair thinning when the usual loss is beyond the expected limits. Several factors could be behind hair loss. These include: Alopecia areata – Affects both males and females; hair loss is rapid and the most common pattern is one or more spots of hair loss on the scalp. This is usually caused by a disorder of the immune system when the natural white cells attack hair follicles. Alopecia Totalis happens with complete loss of scalp hair. When all the body hair is lost it is called Alopecia Universalis, a rare condition.

Hereditary causes: This can result in male pattern baldness which causes 25% of men getting bald by age 30. It is primarily genetic but is also due to the male hormone testosterone. Unhealthy hair is produced or hair production is stopped by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) generated by the conversion of testosterone. Men not having any testosterone would not suffer from male pattern baldness.

Skin diseases: this is a common reason for hair loss and it could affect the scalp too. Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, scalp fungus such as ringworm and tinea captis are some of the common skin diseases which cause hair loss.

Sudden illness or fever: hair can come off in large tufts after an illness or fever. This is a temporary event though and soon passes off.

Childbirth, menopause, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and aging are some of the other factors which could be behind hair loss. Though these are the primary reasons for hair loss, there could be several others also.

Treating hair loss can be done successfully by which you not only stop hair fall but help in re-growth too. Some ways you could have natural hair loss treatments include: 1. Vitamins A, B, C and E are excellent for promoting new hair growth. Why are these vitamins important for hair loss? Their beneficial actions include: providing sebum, improving blood circulation to the scalp by increasing absorption of oxygen and collagen.

2. Importance of scalp care: Remember to massage your scalp regularly with herbal oils like olive oil, jojoba oil, amla oil. In conditions of alopecia areata, several oils are proven to be beneficial. These include: essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood.

3. Avoid scalp abuse - Avoid daily use of chemical shampoos and blow drying. Your hair and scalp stand to get damaged if you use harsh chemical processes like coloring as well as straightening. Even a daily hair wash with hot water can damage hair as well as the scalp with the drying up of natural oils and hair breaking easily.

4. Herbal therapy: Powders of amla, shikakai, henna and ritha as shampoo and conditioner can be effective therapy options. If you are looking for a powerful anti-oxidant which can prevent graying and hair loss, you would get it in amla powder, which is the richest source of natural vitamin C. If you want a hair cleanser which cleanses without depriving your hair of its natural oils, go for Shikakai, also known as the Fruit for hair. It has a natural low pH. Henna then acts as a natural conditioner.

5. Lifestyle changes: This involves doing some stress management by doing exercises and meditation, as stress causes hair loss. Give up Smoking: Smoking causes constriction of the blood vessel which supply blood to the scalp. Avoid over exposure to the sun as the UV rays could damage your scalp.

Hair Loss

Many people spend more time arranging their hair than on any other part of their face or body, so important is this aspect of our appearance to us. The problem with hair loss it affects both sexes although men are more likely to suffer with it and it affects the self confidence of the majority of sufferers.

Hair Loss, also referred to as balding, is caused by a variety of factors, the most important being hereditary and because hair loss runs in the family and gene therapy may lead scientists to a cure in the future. If other men in your family suffer with hair loss in specific places on the head then there is a very good change that you will too as these hormonal imbalances seem to have greater effect as the person’s age increases.

The hair loss problem is therefore as a result of male and female hormones called androgens and estrogens that are at higher levels than they should be. Whilst this much is known, where hair loss is a genetic trait there isn’t as yet a way to cure it.

Both men and women can suffer with pattern-baldness which is caused by a hormone common to both sexes referred to as DHT; this hormone is just one responsible for the sexual development of humans but fortunately it is possible to treat this. It is also possible to stimulate the scalp and hair growth by using shampoos like Rogaine for example or by the use of Propecia pills which help to control the hormone DHT that is in the hair follicles. Of course hair replacement treatments like transplant surgery are generally successful as the hair from the areas where the DHT level is higher are replaced by hair from other areas of the head that are not as sensitive to the hormone.

Our hair growth takes place in cycles which last between two to six years and at any one time about ten percent of our hair is in a dormant phase and not growing but starts to shed after a few months when new hair will grow in its place. Hair in the growing phase can grow as much as one centimeter every month (sometimes more); this of course is quite natural just as losing your hair in these cycles is but some individuals have hair loss problems that are attributable to other causes.

There are many misconceptions relating to hair loss with reasons like stress, wearing a hat that is too tight or poor blood flow even sweat, but these are all inaccurate. The only exception in this list is cases of life threatening stress which some people find it hard top get over but in many incidences it is possible to rectify this hair loss situation.

It is also possible to have a hair loss problem if you have been subject to chemotherapy, have taken pills to control depression or hormones, if you have a diabetes and even an excess of vitamin A can cause the condition along with infections of the scalp. A permanent solution to hair loss might take sometime and whilst many people wait anxiously for it, they will have to use what science has devised so far.
