The June 5, 2008 edition of Phytomedicine reports a study based on an idea generated by the knowledge that estrogen has been demonstrated to affect neuronal development, differentiation and survival. Genistein, diadzein and other isoflavones have been shown to mimic the pharmacological actions of the steroid estrogen, due to their similarity of structure. So, researchers hypothesized that the natural mixture of phytoestrogenic isoflavones found in the herb red clover could protect the brain from glutamate toxicity. They used a human cortical cell line to test the efficacy of the red clover. Neuronal viability was ascertained and neuronal membrane damage was quantitatively measured.

The results gathered suggested that exposure of the cell cultures to glutamate resulted in concentration-dependent decreases in neuron viability. Concentrations of glutamate ranging from 0.01 to 5 mm were toxic to the cultures. However, when the cells were pretreated with 0.5, 1 and 2 mug/ml of the isoflavone enriched fraction from red clover, there was a significantly increased cell survival and significantly decreased release of cellular lactate dehydrogenase, an indicator of cell damage. This indicates that the neurons treated with red clover isoflavones were protected from the cell death induced by glutamate exposure. In addition, the pretreatment with the isoflavone enriched fraction prevented the morphological disruption caused by glutamate as shown in microscopic inspection.

Sinus Infection: Sinus Infection Overview: Sinus infection, or sinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. A sinus infection can cause a headache or pressure in the eyes, nose, cheek area, or on one side of the head. A person with a sinus infection may also have a cough, a fever, bad breath, and nasal congestion with thick nasal secretions. Sinusitis is categorized as acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long term, the most common type).

Symptoms: One or more of the following will exist; facial pain and tenderness on the cheekbones, face and forehead. Earache, headache, dry cough, bad breath, fever, etc., sometimes it can result in a swollen face, stuffy nose, and thick mucous discharge. Other symptoms include pressure in the interior passageways of the skull behind the nose, forehead, and cheeks, you may also have throbbing pain or a sinus headache.

REMEDIES:

Underlying Causes

Eliminate all dairy products. Many people can directly associate an acute “attack” a day or two after eating ice cream, or drinking milk. An acid system can lead to sinus problems…it will always be necessary to cleanse your bowels.

Acute Phase Remedies

Bring equal amounts of Apple Cider Vinegar and water to boil, and then inhale the fumes as it starts to boil, (place a towel over your head to govern the fumes) do this for about 5 minutes. This brings quick relief. Do this twice per day for 2-3 days, will cure a sinus infection in most cases.

Discover 3 Natural Remedies That Will Stop Virtually Any Pain
Tomato Tea

Add 4 cups tomato juice, 4 crushed garlic cloves, 1 tsp of cayenne pepper at least 45,000-90,000 H.U., 4 tsp. fresh lemon juice, and a pinch or two of pure sea salt for flavor. Heat ingredients and drink hot.

Horseradish
Start with 1/4 teaspoon of the freshly grated root of horseradish and hold it in your mouth until all the taste is gone. It will immediately start cutting the mucus loose from the sinuses to drain down the throat. This will relieve the pressure in your sinuses and help clear infection. Horseradish has been shown in laboratory tests to be antibiotic, active against a variety of bacteria, so this can benefit a sinus infection.
In combination with either remedy take 500 milligrams of vitamin C every 2 hours until infection disappears.
