Polarized Sunglasses - Not Just for Fishing Anymore

Polarization has revolutionized the eyewear industry, and with good cause.  It is helping scores of outdoor enthusiasts see better, be safer, and perform better.  Polarized sunglasses help eyesight by removing distracting, dangerous, and obtrusive glare.  Glare can make it difficult to see, and seeing properly is an essential part of almost any activity you might enjoy outdoors.

One of the first groups of outdoor enthusiasts to take advantage of polarized sunglasses was anglers. For as long as fishing has been a hobby or a livelihood, anglers were limited by how clear the water appeared.  The glare of the water often prevented them from being able to tell if there were fish in a particular spot or not.  But when a fisherman wears polarized sunglasses, the water can appear crystal clear.  They can look deep into the lake, river, sea, or ocean and observe where the fish are gathered.  This advantage can make every fishing trip much more successful than if polarized sunglasses weren’t used. You will be hard pressed to find any professional angler using anything but polarized sunglasses for fishing.

Skiers have a great deal to benefit from wearing polarized goggles. Skiing can be exhilarating, but the fast speed of the sport makes being able to see well imperative to safety. This can be a challenge, as light reflected off of ski slopes can make moguls, powder, and ice look like one smooth, white, formless mass. Polarized goggles can make every curve and dip in the snow appear more clearly and therefore easier to navigate.  This makes every ski run not only safer, but more fun as well.  Many professional skiers, such as members of the US ski team, regularly use polarized ski goggles to make their runs safer.

Polarized eyewear provides great benefit on the road by increasing contrast in flat light or rainy conditions. Truck drivers have increasingly turned to polarized sunglasses to help them see better and be safer.  Sometimes, when the sun and a car match up at exactly the wrong angle, it can shoot a blinding reflection into a driver’s eyes.  On the road, even a split second of sight loss increases the likelihood of an accident.  Wearing polarized glasses prevents most of this reflected light from blinding motorists.  It can also make it easier to see while it’s raining and the roads are slick with reflective water.

Of course, not all sunglasses and goggles are polarized. And though common sunglasses can reduce the amount of UV rays that reach your eyes and darken sunlight, they are incapable of removing blinding glare. This distinction might mean the difference between seeing clearly and having to squint to make some objects out.  Squinting all the time because of glare can even make your eyesight poorer over time.

Anyone who spends any amount of time outdoors and relies on their eyesight can benefit from using polarized sunglasses or polarized goggles.   As their benefits become more widely known, more and more people are turning to polarization to improve their eyesight and perform better at their favorite sports and hobbies.
